Wikis and Online Production Application & Tools

Wow! The possibility of reducing traffic caused by email, kleinshare, kleinnet, etc.
How do you reduce this traffic that causes slow computers or slow information from loading through email, eduphoria, kleinshare etc. Think about it, could be cost free and time saving.
One idea could be Web Office or Google Docs (which are considered examples of Production Applications).

  1. I agreed with you. This will reduce the waiting time among documents.

  2. What I get is excited about is the possibility that I can all of my files to one location. I don't use my N: Drive anymore because I can't access them at home or at workshops.

  3. E-mail overload is a constant problem for me. I'm always looking for a way to minimize e-mails. When we looked at RSS feeds, I changed how I get some of my information. I was getting an e-mail notification and now that information is going to my Google reader. I've also been reading that one of the list serves also has an RSS feature that I am going to investigate. The only drawback is that I am not as conscientious about checking my Google reader as I am my e-mail. I may need to take Rosemary's suggestion and move my RSS feeds to Internet Explorer where I will be more likely to see them. It is all a learning experience and I learn something new every day.

I agree that Google docs has some wonderful features. The cost for one is a big plus. The fact that documents can be accessed from anywhere by a group of people is a real advantage for collaboration. I also like that it is similar to Office so making the transition to Google docs wouldn't be a huge learning curve.

  4. Google Docs or other online productivity tools would be great in an "open" environment such as public education.

However, corporations should be very careful about this. There are all sorts of liability issues when your information is hosted on another company's hardware and is not managed locally.

We are at the mercy of the other company to ensure that our documents and our collaborative "space" are always available to us.

Online documents can be managed locally, and documents can be shared on the company's own servers. This way, there is more control of sensitive material.

When you post things on the Internet, there are more "weak" security points along the way from your computer to the other end of the line. Within our own KISD network, there are fewer weak points.
